Why Copper Is the Only Metal

Why Copper Is the Only Metal We Trust on Historic Roofs

When it comes to historic homes and buildings, we don't cut corners — and that especially goes for the metal we use. At Carolina Slate, we work with copper and copper only. No aluminum. No galvanized steel. No "budget-friendly" alternatives. Just copper, every single time.

If you've ever wondered why, pull up a chair. We're happy to explain.

It's Not Just About Looks (Though It Doesn't Hurt)

Let's be honest — copper is beautiful. That warm, bright shine when it's first installed, slowly giving way to the rich blue-green patina over time? There's nothing quite like it. On a historic slate or clay tile roof, copper doesn't just blend in. It belongs.

But beauty is honestly the last reason we choose it. We choose copper because it performs, and it performs for a very, very long time.

Copper Lasts as Long as the Roof Itself

Here's the thing about historic roofs — they're built to last a century or more. A quality slate roof can easily hit 100+ years. So when we're doing flashing, gutters, built-in gutters, or any metal work on one of these roofs, we need metal that can keep up.

Copper can. Properly installed copper flashing and gutters can last 50 to 100 years with minimal maintenance. Aluminum? You might get 20 years if you're lucky. Galvanized steel starts to corrode, especially where it meets other materials. The last thing you want is to restore a 90-year-old slate roof beautifully — and then have the flashing fail in 15 years.

It Plays Well With Others

One of the less-talked-about reasons we love copper is how it behaves alongside natural roofing materials. Slate and clay tile expand and contract with temperature changes. Copper moves with them. It's flexible enough to accommodate that natural movement without cracking, pulling away, or creating gaps where water can sneak in.

Other metals? Not so forgiving. Rigid or mismatched metals can actually cause damage to the surrounding materials over time — exactly the opposite of what you want on a historic structure.

It's the Environmentally Responsible Choice

We care about doing right by the homes we work on and the environment around them. Copper is 100% recyclable and has one of the lowest environmental footprints of any roofing metal over its lifespan. When you factor in how rarely it needs to be replaced, the long-term environmental impact is genuinely minimal compared to metals that end up in a landfill every couple of decades.

The Bottom Line

We use copper on every project — flashing, gutters, built-in gutters, ornamental details, and full metal roofs — because we believe historic homes deserve materials that are as durable and timeless as they are. Choosing cheaper metals might save a little money upfront, but it almost always costs more in the long run.

If you have a historic slate, clay tile, or copper roof in North Carolina or Georgia, we'd love to take a look. Whether it's a small repair or a full restoration, we bring the same standard of craftsmanship to every project.
