The Most Famous Roof in Burgundy — A Roofer's Dream in Beaune, France.
# The Most Famous Roof in Burgundy — A Roofer's Dream in Beaune, France

Over the next several blogs, I am going to take you on a journey — not just through Paris, but through other breathtaking parts of France, including a visit to a Medieval village that will leave you absolutely speechless. Every turn, every courtyard, every rooftop tells a story of craftsmanship, dedication, and materials built to stand the test of centuries.
And this stop? This one is very special.

## Welcome to the Hôtel-Dieu de Beaune — Burgundy, France
Standing in the cobblestone courtyard of the Hôtel-Dieu de Beaune, I genuinely did not know where to look first. This 15th-century charitable hospital — founded in 1443 in the heart of Burgundy's wine country — is one of the most architecturally stunning buildings I have ever seen in my life. And yes, that is me standing in the archway, taking it all in.
But the roof. Oh, the roof.

## The Polychrome Tile Roof — 600 Years of Pure Craftsmanship
What makes the Hôtel-Dieu de Beaune instantly recognizable to anyone in the world is its magnificent **polychrome glazed tile roof** — a breathtaking pattern of gold, black, green, and red tiles laid in perfect geometric diamond patterns across steeply pitched peaks and dormers. It is the kind of roof that makes you stop mid-sentence and just stare.
These are not paint. These are individually hand-glazed clay tiles, fired in different colors and laid by craftsmen with extraordinary precision to create patterns that have held their shape and color for over 600 years. Look closely at the photos — every single tile is placed intentionally. The diamonds, the borders, the color transitions. Nothing is accidental.
From a roofing perspective, this is humbling. Truly humbling.
And notice the contrast — to the left of the main courtyard wing sits a separate building with a classic **dark slate roof**, steep and perfectly laid. Two entirely different roofing materials, side by side, both original to the structure, both standing centuries later. That is what quality installation looks like.

## Inside the Walls — A Roofing Education
What made this visit even more extraordinary was what we found inside. The museum within the Hôtel-Dieu displayed something that stopped me in my tracks — actual **slate installation models** showing exactly how slate is laid on a roof structure, complete with the wooden batten framework, individual slate pieces, and the metal hook system used to fasten them.
Sound familiar? At Carolina Slate LLC, we install every slate repair using slate hooks — the same fundamental system shown in these centuries-old models. Some things don't need to be reinvented. They just need to be done right.
We also found a display of the original **glazed clay tiles** — individual pieces in varying colors and states of wear — showing exactly how these remarkable roof tiles were crafted and what they look like up close after centuries of weathering.

## The Chapel, The Garden & The Wine
No visit to the Hôtel-Dieu is complete without stepping into the chapel — a soaring Gothic space with a painted barrel-vaulted ceiling, original stained glass, and an atmosphere of quiet reverence that genuinely moves you. And in the courtyard garden, the most delicate cream and blush roses were in full bloom — a reminder that even in the most historic of places, beauty finds a way to grow.
And the wine barrels — because this is Burgundy after all. The Hospices de Beaune has been holding its famous wine auction since 1859, and the barrels on display bearing Grand Cru labels like Bâtard-Montrachet, Corton, and Pommard are a reminder that this building has been producing and funding good for its community for over half a millennium.

## What This Means for Your Historic Home
Every time I walk through a place like this, I come home more convinced than ever that historic roofing is not just a trade — it is a responsibility. At Carolina Slate LLC, that is exactly the standard we bring to every home we touch in North Carolina and Georgia. Whether it is slate, clay tile, or copper — we choose materials that honor the history of your home and protect it for the generations to come.
